Shannan used reclaimed wood boards and iron hooks to create a rustic version of a Shaker peg rail.

Unsealed Pine Floors

In the living room, a tall pine armoire from Facebook Marketplace houses the TV and kids’ toys. The original wide-planked floorboards were stripped of red stain to reveal the natural raw yellow pine and then left unsealed. “I didn’t want to sand them because it would take away the character,” says Shannan. Dog Layla seems content with that decision.

White Painted Ceilings

In some of the rooms like the living room, Shannan wasn’t able to remove the red stain from the beams, so she painted the ceilings the same white used throughout the house. “I tried for three months to get the stain off and couldn’t do it without taking away more of the texture, so I had to paint it, which is more period-appropriate since paint predates stains,” she says.

Adjacent to the kitchen, the living room is where the family spends time together most often. It’s simply furnished with a clean-lined white slipcovered sofa and a sanded and bleached coffee table that Drew cut down to better fit the room’s size.

Shannan and Drew crafted an artful sconce from a salvaged corbel, a couple of weathered wood shutters, and a $13 lamp kit.

Weathered and Worn Surfaces

The keeping room made Shannan's heart skip a beat when she first saw it. She offset the original rustic ceiling beams with a crystal chandelier leftover from her previous house and a gilded mirror she bought for $20. “I gravitate toward textures, but I like to throw in moments of elegance,” she says. Shannan intended on stripping the closet door completely of its painted layers, but ended up liking how it looked half-way through the process, so she left it partially unfinished. On the other side of the fireplace, a pair of tall French shutters she found on Facebook Marketplace lean into the recess of the wall.

Deconstructed Upholstery

Shannan had planned to reconstruct the room’s curvy settee that she and Drew took down to the framework, but she decided she liked how it pairs with the tobacco basket on the wall above it. “It’s kind of like an art piece, and this room didn’t need to be super-loungy,” she says. The one-of-a-kind coffee table is constructed from salvaged doors. Leaving the hardware intact makes a fun detail.

Statement-Making Salvage

When the Haupts bought the house, the updated kitchen looked like it belonged in a new-build home; “It didn’t talk to the rest of the house,” Shannan says. They removed upper cabinets, tore out a tile floor, replaced a peninsula with an antique mercantile counter, and added the freestanding pine hutch. The floorboards are reclaimed pine planks intended for barn trim. “We saw the reverse side of the trim boards and thought to use it as flooring since it looked like salvaged wood,” she says. The green fixture above the sink is an old factory light she found on Etsy. “It’s from an old factory and is explosion proof so it’s perfect over the sink in case I hit it with a pot!” she says.

Unfussy Furniture

The dining room’s long, narrow footprint called for simple farmhouse-style furnishings, and the narrow 30-inch-wide, 9-foot-long orchard table suited the space perfectly. “Quirky and wonky spaces are intriguing, and it’s fun to try to solve the design challenges they can present,” says Shannan. A pair of hanging iron candleabras picks up on the original iron straps elsewhere in the house.

An old worktable on the far end of the dining room acts as a unique console with added storage underneath. The woven piece leaning against the wall is from Pottery Barn.

Uncovered Brick

Drew and Shannan discovered the bedroom’s original brick fireplace hiding behind layers of white plaster. It sets an incredibly cozy tone, reinforced by low ceilings (just under seven feet!) and gauzy linens atop an antique pine bed, which is a converted double that “kind-of” holds a queen mattress. The hearth houses a bowl filled with sentimental pillar candles the couple used as centerpieces at their wedding reception.

Shannan fashioned the drapery rods throughout the house out of tobacco lath sticks, then added pegs to loop the simple linen curtains around the top.
